Game Design

 Game Design

My reading task for this week was to read and understand firstly, what a game is?, how games work? and the four basic methods for generating ideas to apply to the process of making a game.

The first papper i read was "What is a game anyway"  This article answerd the question of what a game is it also coverd the definitions of a game and how differnt poeple may interpret these deffinions. It briefly coverd what rules and motivation is needed for participants to play a nasic game.

Following along the "What is a game anyway" article i continued to read "Lets make a game" this part of the article gave me a step by bstep guide of making a basic game. i have never seen myself delving in the 'game design' side of digital media as frankly it scares me as i amnt really a annimation/game type of person but this article breaks down to the most very basic side of what a game is and how to to make one, the objective of the article is "if you take one thing from this article take that you can create a playable game in minites"

The final Article i read was "The four basic methods of generating a game"  This article outlines i four easy steps the process in which you should follow in order to generate a game idea or in the resecrh design process of a game the steps were as follows,

  •  Concentraion : using your concentraion you "think untill you have an idea"
  • Brainstorming: The group of people in which are designing a game idea it is important those are brainstorming and are being as "diverse as possibel"
  • Scamper: The scamper is the teqniques that the game designer or group of designers "change untill they find an idea"
  • Ramsey: This is the most difficult f the four methods it is a method designed by phsycoligest Ramsey and it says that "if you take a significant amount of information and start looking at it closely and manically, you can find new information or find inconspicuous links", "The essence of this method is that you collect the maximum amount of information on the topic that you need to assemble the games. And then you start to study this data, looking for hidden connotations and imperceptible connections in it until the concept of the game is collected from these pieces. The effectiveness of this method depends only on two factors: the amount of information received and the effort spent studying this information".

  1. Hey Cliodhna,
I really enjoyed reading this blog, for someone who said in their introduction post they weren't good with words you wrote a very good an easy to read post that I feel that summarized the papers very well. The way you lay out the steps made them very easy to read for me anyway. I hope your keeping well and your semester is going well.
